Walton County has 15 named coastal dune lakes, averaging about five feet deep. Start on the quiet western end of 30A: Western Lake at Grayton Beach State Park or Oyster Lake in Dune Allen. September is the month: the Gulf is still 84°F, the Labor Day crowds are gone, and the lakes sit glassy before 9 a.m.
What is a coastal dune lake?
A shallow freshwater lake behind the dunes that periodically opens a channel, called an outfall, into the Gulf and turns brackish after each breach. Walton County protects them as rare habitat: stay off the outfall sand and keep dogs out of the dune grass.
